The Frederick F. Schaffer House

Frederick F. Schaffer’s house sat in the spot that Mr. Whittemore wanted for the Naugatuck Highschools’s location. Estimated in 1904, he purchased the house from Mr. Schaffer. The home was moved to 18 Hillside Avenue. Mr. Schaffer built a home on 56 Rockwell Avenue.

As of December 2025, 18 Hillside Ave is Stokes Counseling.

18 Hillside Ave home (which previously sat where Hillside Intermediate School is) was built in the 1880’s by Robert Smith. Frederick Schaffer was the second owner of the home.

56 Rockwell Avenue

This home was built circa 1904. The intersecting gambrel roofs with flaring eaves are a hallmark of the Colonial Revival style, which was in the height of fashion when this house was built.

The local history of the house says it was built for John Howard Whittemore’s daughter as a wedding present. It might explain the gaps in when it was built and when F.F. Schaeffer moved in to the home in 1913.
